Bed bug inspection in Birmingham

An inspection settles two things before you spend on treatment: whether it really is bed bugs, and how many rooms are involved. The specialist works outward from the bed in a set order and writes down what they find.

On its own an inspection is typically £60 to £120. Many firms take the fee off the treatment if you go ahead with them; ask before the visit.

When an inspection is worth booking

Book one first when

  • You are waking with bites but have never seen a bug, and want fleas, mites or a skin reaction ruled out.
  • You let a house in multiple occupation and must decide how many bedrooms to include.
  • You are moving into a let, or taking a room back from a lodger, and want a clean bill before you unpack.
  • Someone else in your building has them and you need to know whether your flat is clear.

You can probably go straight to treatment when

  • A bug has been caught and kept, and only one bed has bites. The specialist will check the room at the start of the first treatment in any case.
  • Several rooms already show clear signs: spotting on mattresses, shed skins and live bugs.

How an inspection is carried out

A methodical inspection follows the bugs' habits: they hide close to where people sleep or sit, in dark seams and joints, and spread outward from there.

What Birmingham inspections often turn up

In shared houses around Selly Oak and Bournbrook, where many University of Birmingham students live, bed bugs often start in one room after a holiday or a move and spread along landings. An inspection that covers every bedroom costs a little more but avoids paying twice.

In flats, especially the city's tower blocks, the question is often whether bugs are coming from next door. A good inspector checks the shared walls, the riser cupboards and where pipes pass between flats, and tells you honestly if the source is outside your home.

The NHS lists the signs to look for yourself first: bites, small spots of blood on bedding, dark spots of droppings on the mattress and the bugs themselves. NHS: bedbugs.

Not sure it is bed bugs? Ask for an inspection and get a written answer before paying for treatment.

Six things the written quote should state

Put the same six questions to every firm and their quotes line up side by side.

ItemWhat to look for
Scope of the inspectionWhich rooms and furniture are covered, whether a written finding is included, and whether the fee comes off the treatment price.
Visits and datesHow many visits, how far apart, and whether the follow-up is booked now or left for you to chase. Spray courses are normally two or three visits; heat is one long day and a check.
What is in the priceWhich rooms, whether sofas and divans are included, steam, mattress encasements and the follow-up. A low headline figure often leaves these out.
Products and re-entryWhich products are used, the time to keep out of each treated room, and any change in approach for babies, pregnancy or pets.
Your preparation listWhat to wash, bag and leave in place, written down for your home rather than read out on the phone.
If bites continueWhether a call-back within an agreed number of weeks costs extra, and what proof the firm wants first.

How long does a bed bug inspection take?

About 30 minutes to an hour for a typical home. A shared house with five or six bedrooms, or a flat where neighbours are involved, can take longer.

What should I do before the inspector comes?

Leave the bed made and the furniture in place, and hold off on the big wash: the inspector needs to see the signs where they are. If you have caught a bug, keep it in a sealed bag or jar.

Can an inspection miss bed bugs?

Yes, in a light, early infestation a few bugs can be missed. If the inspection finds nothing but the bites continue, ask about monitors or interceptor traps under the bed legs and a second look a few weeks later.

Do firms use detection dogs in Birmingham?

Some do, mainly for hotels, halls and larger buildings where checking room by room by hand is slow. For a single home a visual inspection is usually enough.

Is the inspection fee taken off the treatment?

Often, but not always. Ask when you book. Some firms include a basic inspection free at the start of the first treatment visit.
